Chapter Four

“Morning, kiddo.” Artemis crossed the quiet kitchen and grabbed a cereal bowl. “Staying home from work today?”

After nearly a week of grovelling, Artemis still couldn’t get Vincent to talk. The air clouded with his unwavering anger. He seemed to think she was the root of all evil.

But she wasn’t. She’d encountered that force. It had taken over her boyfriend’s body one night. She still didn’t know who or what it was, but if evil resided in their house, it lay with that monster, not in Artemis.

Every time her mind crossed the precipice to the night she was taken, her body filled with a strange combination of sensations. She relived the pain of being fucked from behind, against her will, but soon the pain drifted toward pleasure. That’s when guilt took over.

She reminded herself it was Budd’s body. She had every right to the orgasm Vincent had, unfortunately, witnessed. Didn’t she?

Maybe she should have done more to fight the creature’s advances, but what? It locked all her muscles. Even if it hadn’t, Budd’s body was much bigger than hers. He could have taken her down. Hell, he could have taken her out. For good.

“Just pick a fucking cereal!” Vincent slammed his spoon on the table. “There are only four. Why does it take you three million years to choose?”

Artemis hadn’t realized she was staring at cereal boxes, but she appreciated that Vincent had finally spoken to her. “Oh. I… sorry.”

“And why are you prancing around in my dad’s T-shirt?” he growled. “I live here too. I don’t want to see your chunky-ass thighs every time I turn my head.”

She wanted to say, “My thighs aren’t chunky!” Instead, she said, “I’m sorry, Vince. You’re right.”

“You never think about anyone but yourself,” he grumbled.

“You don’t really mean that.” Choosing a cereal at random, she brought the box to the table. He got up hastily, and took his bowl to the sink. “Vincent, listen, you probably won’t believe this, but I care a lot about your dad. He’s an amazing guy. In fact, he’s the best guy I’ve ever met.”

“I know he is,” Vincent snapped. “So he deserves better than a homeless gold digger.”

That hurt more than Artemis thought possible. She swivelled her kitchen chair to look at him. “You think I’m a gold digger?”

“Aren’t you?” he shot back, before she’d finished asking the question.

Clasping her hand to her heart, she said, “No. I’m not.”

“Yes. You are.”

Artemis froze. She’d been looking right at Vincent’s face when he said those three words, but… but his lips hadn’t moved. Either Vincent was secretly a ventriloquist, or something sinister was about to happen.

The kitchen’s comfortable temperature grew as frosty as Vincent’s demeanour. From there, it went to the other extreme. The room turned sweltering. And the smell! She knew that swamp scent all too well…

“Take off my father’s T-shirt,” Vincent said. This time his lips moved, but his eyes glowed an unmistakeable scarlet. “Take it off.”

“Not right here in the kitchen.” Artemis rose from her chair and took hold of the shirt’s hem.
